How to Choose the Right Drill Bit
Match the bit to the material, the hole, and the tool for cleaner drilling and more dependable results.
A drill can only perform as well as the bit fitted to it. Using the wrong drill bit can lead to rough holes, damaged surfaces, excessive heat, premature wear, or a project that takes far longer than it should.
The easiest way to choose correctly is to start with the material you are drilling, then consider the hole size, drilling depth, and finish you need.
Start With the Material
For Wood
Standard twist bits work well for many everyday jobs. Brad-point bits are especially useful when you want a cleaner, more accurately positioned hole because the center point helps keep the bit from wandering. For larger openings, spade bits and hole saws are practical choices depending on the finish required.
For Metal
Use bits designed for metalworking. High-speed steel drill bits are suitable for many common metals, while tougher materials may require more durable bit types. A controlled drilling speed and steady pressure usually produce better results than forcing the tool.
For Tile & Masonry
Use a bit specifically designed for hard mineral surfaces. Masonry bits are intended for brick, block, and similar materials, while tile bits are shaped to help start cleanly on hard, smooth surfaces. Always confirm that the bit matches the material before drilling.

Match the Bit Size to the Job
The diameter of the drill bit should match the purpose of the hole.
For a pilot hole, choose a bit that allows the screw threads to grip while reducing the risk of splitting the material. For hardware installation, the hole often needs to match the diameter specified for the anchor, bolt, or fitting.
When accuracy matters, avoid estimating by eye. Check the fastener, anchor, or fitting before drilling and confirm the required diameter.

Keep the Drill Straight
Even the correct drill bit can produce a poor result if the drill enters the material at an angle.
Mark the hole clearly, position the bit accurately, and keep the drill aligned with the surface. Begin slowly so the tip can establish its position before increasing speed.
For repeatable work, a square or simple guide can help maintain alignment.
Control Speed and Pressure
More speed is not always better.
Excessive speed can create heat and wear the cutting edge quickly, especially when drilling metal or dense materials. Too much pressure can also damage the bit or cause the drill to bind.
Let the cutting edges do the work. Use consistent pressure, clear debris when necessary, and stop if the bit becomes excessively hot.

Check the Bit Before You Start
Before drilling, inspect the bit for obvious damage or excessive wear. A dull or damaged cutting edge can make the drill harder to control and produce an uneven hole.
Also confirm that the bit is seated securely in the chuck before operating the tool.
A quick inspection takes only a few seconds and helps you start with a tool setup that is easier to control and better suited to the job.
